Gary Yamamoto, founder and owner of Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, was born and raised in Hawaii where, as a youth, his parents imposed the fateful chore of catching fish in a local creek for the family dinner. He added a California college education and U.S. Air Force and Vietnam veteran credentials before his chapter in the Japanese-American Connection even began.
He bought a campground in Page, Arizona, on fish-filled Lake Powell where he earned prominence fishing bass tournaments, cultivating finesse techniques of West Coast bass anglers.
In search of lures with ?more natural actions? and ?realistic colors,? he aligned himself with sources that would make soft plastic baits to his own specifications. Compelled to order in wholesale quantities, he sold the surplus to local anglers.
His reputation spread quickly through the tourney ranks, and soon he was selling baits throughout the five states in the Southwest.
Today, Gary Yamamoto is one of the premier fishing lure companies in the world. From weekend anglers to top tournament fishermen, they all have Yamamoto baits in their arsenal.
